New Mexico Permit Practice Test

U-turns in residential districts are legal when there are no vehicles approaching nearby. This condition is crucial because it ensures the safety of all road users. By making sure that the area is clear of oncoming traffic, drivers can complete the maneuver without creating hazards for themselves or others. This rule reflects a broader principle in driving, which is to always assess the surrounding environment before making any potentially obstructive or dangerous moves.

Contextually, the other conditions provided do not inherently guarantee safe execution of a U-turn. Traffic lights regulate movements at intersections but do not specifically govern U-turns in residential settings. Similarly, the stipulation to only perform U-turns during daylight hours is not a legal requirement in most jurisdictions, as many drivers may need to turn at night when it is safe to do so. Lastly, relying on signals from other drivers to perform a U-turn can be misleading and unsafe, as those drivers may not have the same understanding of the situation, potentially leading to confusion or accidents. Hence, assessing the proximity of other vehicles is the best guideline for executing a legal and safe U-turn in residential areas.
